- ZeppeLAN (tm) User's Guide
-
- Chapter 1. Introduction
-
- ZeppeLAN (ZEP) is a program that allows a NetWare user to manage
- certain parts of the NetWare local area network (LAN) environment
- with less trouble than is usually required with the NetWare
- utility programs.
-
- You can run ZEP in one of two ways: as a memory-resident popup
- program or from the DOS command line. Both modes are functionally the
- same. The memory-resident mode is available from within other
- applications when you press a hot key. To run the command-line
- version, you must exit your application or shell out to the DOS
- prompt from within the application you are running. As an
- alternative, you can install the command-line ZEP program in a
- Windows or DesqView window or as a swapped task under the DOS 5
- DOSSHELL program's task swapper.
-
- The shareware version of ZEP, which this document describes, includes
- several work station desktop applications, including shared printer
- selection, a telephone dialer, logging on and off the network, and
- sending one-line messages to other logged-on users or groups. Each of
- these processes is described fully in the chapters that follow.
-
- The commercial version of ZEP, which you get when you register the
- shareware version, adds support for multiple file servers, allows you
- to capture the output of all your printer ports, and includes
- electronic memos between network users and on-line mapping of network
- drives to network directories.
-
- Following is a description of the differences between the commercial
- and shareware versions.
-
- 1. The memory-resident mode of the shareware version is fully memory
- resident and occupies about 50K of conventional DOS memory. The
- commercial version swaps most of the program to expanded or extended
- memory or to a swap disk file. The memory-resident part occupies only
- about 5K of conventional DOS memory.
-
- 2. The commercial version of ZEP works with multiple file servers in
- a LAN. The shareware version works only with a work station's primary
- file server.
-
- 3. The commercial version allows you to concurrently capture the
- output from LPT1, LPT2, and LPT3 to selected network print queues
- across file servers. The shareware version captures LPT1 only to
- print queues on the work station's primary file server.
-
- 4. The commercial version allows you to select a Print Configuration
- that you define with NetWare's PRINTCON program. The shareware
- version does not give you access to Print Configurations.
-
- 5. The commercial version includes the ZEP Electronic Memo feature
- that allows you to exchange memos with other users on the network.
- The shareware version does not include this feature.
- ZeppeLAN User's Guide Page 2
-
-
-
- 6. The commercial version allows you to log in and out of file
- servers on the network from within the program. The shareware version
- does not.
-
- 7. The commercial version allows you to map network drives to network
- directories from within the program. The shareware version does not.
-
- 8. The shareware version includes an on-line product registration
- form that you can fill out and print from within the program. The
- commercial version does not include this form since it assumes that
- you are already registered.
-
- 9. The commercial version includes a printed copy of the user's
- manual, upgrades to new versions for a reduced cost, and telephone
- technical support.
-

-
- Chapter 2. Installation
-
- This chapter is about the installation of ZEP onto a network.
- Usually, the Network Administrator or SUPERVISOR user will install
- the program files on the network file server. Users may install their
- own configurations by using command line options when they load or
- run the program. As an alternative, a work station user can install a
- private copy of the programs. ZEP does not need to be installed on
- the file server.
-
- 2.1 System Requirements
-
- To run ZEP, you must have NetWare version 2.15 or greater, DOS
- version 3.0 or greater, and at least 70K available in your
- workstation's conventional memory if you are going to load ZEP as a
- memory-resident program. Note that the commercial version, which you
- get when you register, requires only 5K.
-
- 2.2 Files in the ZEP Distribution
-
- Whether you downloaded ZEP from an on-line service or bulletin board
- service or purchased it from a shareware diskette vendor, you will
- have these files:
-
- ZEP.EXE The load module for the memory-resident program.
- ZEPLAN.EXE The command line program and the transient part of
- the memory-resident program.
- ZEP.HLP The Help database.
- HOTKEY.EXE A program to help you determine hot key scan codes
- and shift masks to customize the hot key with a
- command-line option.
- ZEP.DOC This documentation file.
-
- 2.2 Installing the ZEP Software
-
- 1. Log onto a file server as the SUPERVISOR user or a user with
- SUPERVISOR privileges.
-
- 2. Copy the files ZEP.EXE, ZEPLAN.EXE, ZEP.HLP, and HOTKEY.EXE into a
- publicly available subdirectory on the file server. Add a search path
- to the subdirectory in the NetWare System Login Script so that
- everyone can find and load the software into their work stations. The
- simplest way to install ZEP is to copy the files into the SYS:\PUBLIC
- subdirectory.
-
- 3. Set up the NetWare print queues with the NetWare PCONSOLE utility
- program. When you associate print queues with printers, name the
- queues with names that are meaningful to the users. The users will
- see these print queue names when they select a printer to which they
- want to direct the print output from their applications programs.
-
- 4. The HOTKEY.EXE program is a utility program that displays the ZEP
- command-line option for selected hot keys. If a user wants to change
- the ZEP hot key, this program will help. The instructions for running
- it are here. Enter its name, HOTKEY, on the command line. The program
- will display this message: ZeppeLAN User's Guide Page 4
-
-
-
- Hot Key Code Computation (Enter for hot key codes.)
- Press Hot Key...
-
- Press different hot key combinations. As you do, the program will
- display the name of what you entered as shown in this message:
-
- Press Hot Key...Alt+LeftShift+N
-
- When you have pressed the hot key combination that you want and its
- name is displaying in the message just shown, press the Enter key.
- The program will display this message:
-
- Alt+LeftShift+N = BIOS Shift Mask: 0a, Keyboard Scan Code: 31
- Example command line:
- zep +h310a
-
- The example command line is the way you would run ZEP to change the
- command line to Alt+LeftShift+N. See Chapter 3 for a discussion of
- command line options.
-
- ZeppeLAN User's Guide Page 5
-
-
- Chapter 3. Running ZEP
-
- You run ZEP either as a memory-resident program or as a normal DOS
- program from the command line. Both operating modes have command line
- options that follow the program's name on the command line.
-
- 3.1 Command Line Options
-
- Following are the command line options for ZEP when you run it in
- either the memory-resident mode or as a DOS program from the command
- line. A command line option consists of plus (+) or minus (-)
- followed by a letter, which may be upper or lower case. Some options
- have more information after the letter.
-
- +c1 or +c2 - Set the Dialer Communications Port
-
- This option sets the Dialer's communication port to COM1 or COM2. Use
- C1 for COM1 and C2 for COM2. This communications port is the port to
- which your modem is connected. C1 is the default.
-
- +m - Use monochrome display
-
- This option tells ZEP to use monochrome (black and white) screens
- instead of color screens. You would use this option if you have a
- monochrome display monitor attached to a color card and the resulting
- screens are difficult to read or unattractive. Some laptop screens
- are easier to view with this option. ZEP will use this option
- automatically if you have a Monochrome Display Adaptor in your
- computer.
-
-
- The next option applies to ZEP's memory-resident mode only.
-
- +h - Set the Hot Key
-
- This option sets the ZEP hot key, the key combination that you press
- to pop up ZEP. You would use this option if the default hot key,
- Alt+LeftShift+P, interferes with keys used by other programs that you
- run. You enter a two-digit keyboard scan code followed by a two-digit
- shift mask after the H on the command line. For example, to set the
- hot key to Alt+LeftShift+N, use this command line option:
-
- +h310a
-
- The scan code and shift mask values are hexadecimal, and the
- HOTKEY.EXE program described in Chapter 2 will tell you what its
- values can be.
-
- 3.2 Loading Memory-resident ZEP
-
- You load ZEP into memory as a memory-resident program by entering its
- name on the command line like this:
-
- zep
-
- Follow the program name with any command line options you wish to ZeppeLAN User's Guide Page 6
-
-
- make. For example, to load ZEP so that it uses COM2 for the Dialer,
- enter this command:
-
- zep +c2
-
- ZEP displays this screen when you load it.

-
- The message at the bottom of the display tells you how many times you
- have used the shareware version. It is a reminder that you should
- register the program and get the commercial version.
-
- 3.3 Popping Up ZEP
-
- After you have loaded ZEP into memory, you may pop it up onto the
- screen at any time as long as whatever you are running is not a
- graphics program. To pop it up, press the hot key. ZEP pops up this
- menu.

- the cursor to a command by typing the first letter of the command.
-
- 3.4 Popping Down
-
- To return to the program that you interrupted to run ZEP, press the
- Esc key while the Main Menu is being displayed.
-
- 3.5 Unloading ZEP
-
- To unload ZEP from memory, select the Unload command on the Main
- Menu. Use this command only when you have popped ZEP up from the DOS
- command line and when no other memory-resident programs are resident
- above ZEP. If another program is running or resident above ZEP, ZEP
- cannot unload itself and will display an error message to that
- effect. A memory-resident program is above ZEP if you loaded it after
- you loaded ZEP.
-
- ZeppeLAN User's Guide Page 7
-
-
- 3.6 Running ZEP from the DOS Command Line
-
- If you do not want to keep ZEP resident in memory, you can run it as
- a DOS command line program. Its operation is the same as when it is
- memory resident except that you will not see the Unload command on
- the Main Menu. To run ZEP from the command line, enter this command:
-
- zeplan
-
- ZEP will take over the entire screen with a background display, and
- will display the Main Menu as shown above without the Unload command.
- When you press the Esc key from the Main Menu, ZEP will exit to the
- DOS command line. All of the changes that you made by using ZEP will
- still be in effect, however.

-
-
- Chapter 4. On-Line Help
-
- ZEP provides context-sensitive on-line help. Press F1 at any time
- during the operation of ZEP to see a window that displays what is
- going on. After you have read the help window, press any key to
- return to ZEP.
-
- ZeppeLAN User's Guide Page 9
-
-
- Chapter 5. Printing
-
- ZEP's primary function is to allow you to select network printers. In
- the usual NetWare environment, you must select and de-select a
- network printer from the DOS command line by using the NetWare
- CAPTURE and ENDCAP commands. To use those commands, you must exit
- from your application. With ZEP, you can select a network printer by
- popping up ZEP and selecting the Printing command on the Main Menu.
-
- 5.1 Selecting a Network Printer
-
- When you select the Printing command on the Main menu, ZEP displays
- the Printer menu, which looks like this.

- The entry with the (+) token is you. The (+) token indicates that
- you currently have messages enabled, which means that NetWare and
- other users can interrupt your processing with a one-line message at
- the bottom of the screen. If you did not have messages enabled, the
- token would be (-). See Enabling and Disabling Messages in this
- chapter.
-
- NetWare users have two names: their login userid and a so-called
- "full name." Your userid is a nickname that you use to log into the
- network. The Network Administrator assigns full names to login userid
- accounts with the NetWare SYSCON utility program. If you have a full
- name, ZEP uses it to display lists of users. If you do not have a
- full name, ZEP uses your login userid.
-
- 7.2 Sending a Message to a User
-
- You can send a one-line message to a user from the Users list shown
- above. Move the menu cursor to one of the users other than yourself
- and press Enter. You will see this message entry window.

- that the message is not delivered.
-
- 7.3 Enabling and Disabling Messages
-
- You can enable and disable one-line messages to yourself by using
- ZEP. You would do this when you do not want to be interrupted. Some
- programs, such as communications programs, should not be interrupted
- in the manner that the NetWare messages do it.

- Chapter 8. Registration
-
- When you register your shareware copy of ZEP, you receive many
- benefits, including the commercial version of ZEP, printed user
- documentation, customer support on our support hot line, free
- upgrades for one year, and low-cost upgrades after that.
-
- Registration costs $95. Select the Register command on the Main menu.
- If you have used your shareware ZEP more than 30 times, ZEP
- automatically executes the Register command each time you load the
- program. This procedure does not mean that you cannot use the program
- without registering at that time or that you must complete the
- registration before using the program any more. Simply press Esc to
- go to the Main menu if you do not want to register right away.
-
- Eventually, however, you should register the program. That is what
- makes the shareware concept work. You can try out the program for a
- while. If it turns out to be useful to you, then and only then do you
- pay for it.
-
- The Register command displays the Registration form as shown here.
